South Korea 2022 Day 6: Jeju - Busan

  DAY 6: 1 DEC 2022
Gamcheon Culture Village

We were due to leave Jeju today.
Kind of sad to leave this amazing place.
Nevertheless, we will be off to explore a different city.

Sea view from our living room

We got up just before sunrise as we were due to return the car by 8am.
Before checking out, we had some donuts in the living room.

These were the Randy's donuts bought yesterday.
The coconut versions were a tad sweet for my liking and we definitely preferred the glazed donuts.

Just before driving to the rental office, we took a photo with our trusty car 0410!

Before returning the car, we popped by a petrol station near the rental office.
This was the only time we refueled during this road trip and we paid 50,000 krw to top up to full tank.

After returning the rental car, we took the free shuttle from the rental office to Jeju airport.
The ride took less than 10 minutes as we were in close vicinity to the airport.

We arrived at the airport at 8.30am and were too early to check in for our flight at 10.50am.
As we had lots of time on hand, we made our way to the rooftop garden which was an area where we could watch the planes take off or land.
The domestic airport was really busy at that time and we saw many planes taking off and landing.
Thereafter, we decided to search for the exclusive Paris Baguette Jeju sand cookies.
To our dismay, they were all sold out and the next sale timing was 11am.
I wonder what is so good about those cookies...

Finally, it was boarding time!

We had to transfer to a bus before boarding the plane.
Zhi Sheng looked forward to this as he could take a photo with the plane.
We flew Jeju Air to Busan and we paid S$43 per pax for the flybag option which included 15kg of checked baggage.
It was an early bird promotion and I highly recommend you to book your domestic flights early to take advantage of such promotions.

After a short flight, we arrived at Busan Gimhae Airport.
Baggage collection was pretty quick as most people on our flight did not have checked baggage.
We followed the signages to get to the LRT.
As we were heading to Seomyeon, we had to take the LRT to Sasang and then change to metro line 2 to get to Seomyeon station.
Our entire train ride took about 45 minutes.
Upon exiting Seomyeon station, we took a 10 minutes walk to our hotel in Busan:
Solaria Nishitetsu Hotel Busan

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights and we paid S$145 for 2 nights.
We chose to stay in Seomyeon as it was a good base for us to travel to different attractions in Busan.

As we arrived before the check in time, we stored our baggage at the hotel and headed out for lunch!
One of the must-eats in Busan is dwaeji gukbap (pork soup with rice).
While searching for places to eat online, I chanced upon this 3 generation restaurant which was located near Seomyeon station: Songjeong Samdae Gukbap (송정3대국밥)

When we entered, I didn't even realised there was a queue until Zhi Sheng pointed out that there were patrons seated at the waiting area.
This is so me btw.
Anyway, the owner passed us a menu which had English translation while waiting.
The staff got us a table within 5 - 10 minutes and we ordered our gukbap!

Naejang gukbap (pork intestine soup with rice)

Dwaeji gukbap (pork soup with rice)

I had the dwaeji gukbap while Zhi Sheng had naejang gukbap which was the intestines version.
Each dish costs 8,000 krw.
When the ahjumma came with our soup, she asked who ordered dwaeji gukbap in Korean.
My mind was blank for a moment but then I remembered the dish name in Korean so I just pointed to Zhi Sheng and said "naejang".
The ahjumma understood what I said and proceeded to place the naejang gukbap in front of Zhi Sheng.

She also told me to add salt and pepper to my soup.
I wondered why at first, but realised it after tasting the soup.
It was pretty bland to me so a little extra seasoning made the soup better.
Overall, it was a nice first meal in Busan!

After our lunch, we made our way to Gamcheon Culture Village!
To get there, we took the line 1 train to Toseong and transferred to a minibus (1-1, 2 or 2-2) and alighted at Gamjung Elementary School.
The minibus had announcements for every stop in English which was useful for us.

We got off the bus safely and were greeted by the many colourful houses in the village.

Before you get overly excited about that amazing viewpoint, you must know that the viewpoint is the end of the walking trail.
The start of the walking trail is down the slope from the bus stop and you can view the trail map from the bus stop.

There are many nice murals and photo spots all around the village.
However, the most popular spot is the little prince statue!

We continued to explore the trail as the sun started to set from a distance.

We returned back to the initial viewpoint to take a bus to Jagalchi station.
We took the same buses as before from the bus stop across the road.
After a short ride, we arrived at Jagalchi station.
On our way to Jagalchi market, we spotted a street cart selling red bean fish bread.
She was selling it at 2 for 1,000 krw.
Although she mistook my "2" for 2 packs, we finished 4 fish bread by the next day!

Jagalchi market

Having arrived from Jeju, nothing fancied us that moment.
We also had a late lunch and it was too early to eat a full meal.

Fish cake specialty store

We wandered around the market for a short while and then walked to BIFF Square.

BIFF Square had many street food carts (pocha) and they sell the typical street foods such as eomuk, hotteok, corn dog, tteokbokki and sundae.

I wanted to try eating in a Korean pocha at least once in this trip and I spotted foreigners eating inside a pocha.
We ordered eomuk with white pepper soup for 4,000 krw and proceeded to sit at a table.
The eomuk was good and the soup warmed us up.

When in Busan, it is a must to eat the seed hotteok!
We got our seed hotteok from BIFF Square at 2,000 krw.

Seed hotteok

This stall made their seed hotteok a little differently.
They first stuffed the hotteok with brown sugar powder and deep fry it.
Once done, they cut the hotteok and fill it with seeds.
The seed hotteok here was nice but the one we had the next day was amazing!

After exploring BIFF Square and its surroundings, we took a train back to Seomyeon station.
Initially, we couldn't decided what to eat.
Zhi Sheng found a pork cutlet restaurant near the station and we decided to have our dinner there!

The staff were welcoming and friendly.
We ordered a cheese pork cutlet and kimchi udon to share.

Both dishes were good but I preferred the cheese pork cutlet.
I mean who doesn't love cheese?

And that's the end of our first day in Busan (:
