South Korea 2022 Day 4: Jeju

DAY 4: 29 NOV 2022

Rise and shine!
It was pouring last night and the wind was howling too.
We got to our balcony and were greeted by the tangerine fields all around us!

Our schedule today was more relaxing with only 3 places to visit.
Something that I looked forward to in Jeju was tangerine picking!
After checking out, we drove to Choi Nam Dan Orange Farm (최남단 감귤체험).
We were deciding between two farms and decided to go with this one as the rates are slightly cheaper.
Each adult tangerine picking experience was only 5,000 krw and the both of us could pick 2kg worth of tangerines.
The farm had other activities such as the monorail and jam making which are reasonably priced.
After paying for our experience, we were given a bucket and were told to follow the signages for tangerine picking.
We got lost along the way because the signages were not up completely.
Initially we walked to an area with trees full of tangerines and assumed this was the right area.
However, I remembered seeing pictures of people using scissors to cut the stem to pick the tangerines and the scissors were not given together with our bucket.
Zhi Sheng said that we did not need scissors to pick the tangerines...but he was proven wrong later (:

After some time, Zhi Sheng saw a group holding onto a bucket full of tangerines and asked for directions.
That's when we finally found our way to the picking area!

We were greeted by an ahjusshi who passed us a pair of scissors and taught us how to pick the tangerines.
Also, he mentioned that we could eat the tangerines as we pick and fill our buckets to its brim just below the handle.
And so, we started picking tangerines!

The tangerines were seedless and most of them were sweet!
Zhi Sheng spotted yellow ones on some trees and picked one to see if it is a different type of tangerine.
To our dismay, it was so difficult to peel off the skin and we assumed that the tangerine was just an unripe one.

Our buckets filled up pretty quickly and we had a good amount of tangerines to eat!

Our tangerines also travelled with us to Busan and Seoul.
We finished all the tangerines before departing for Singapore except for two which turned moldy.

The orange farm has a mini animal farm too.
We saw alpacas, rabbits and dogs in the farm.
Visitors can pay a small fee to purchase animal feeds and it is definitely something kids will enjoy.

After tangerine picking, we drove back to Seogwipo city to have lunch.

Dwaeji guksu

Olle Guksu has a branch in Seogwipo and I thought we should try it!
We ordered dwaeji guksu (pork noodle soup) for 9,000 krw each.
It was alright, nothing fantastic.

After lunch, we drove to Jusangjeolli cliff (대포주상절리) which was situated towards the west of Seogwipo.
Each adult ticket costs 2,000 krw and on-site parking is free.

There were a lot of tourists here and they were mainly part of tour groups from Vietnam and Singapore.

After viewing the cliffs, we headed to our last attraction: Camellia Hill (카멜리아힐).
There was free on-site parking but admission to the gardens costs 9,000 krw per adult.
It was really crowded when we arrived.

Camellia flowers bloom in winter and we were lucky to see them here.
The petals on the ground made the area even more dreamy and fairytale-like.
The botanical garden consists of many different sections and we slowly covered every section during our time there.

There were many photo spots with chairs and decorative items for visitors to take photos at.

The wind started to get even stronger halfway through our visit.
It made experience a little uncomfortable as it got really cold then.

After 2 hours at the botanical gardens, we left to check in at our next airbnb for the night:
J Cube Pension (제이큐브 펜션)
We stayed in the duplex apartment and paid S$81 for one night.
The living room, kitchenette and bathroom are on the first floor while the bedroom is on the second floor.

Bedroom on the 2nd floor

The first floor had a huge glass window which provided us with great views of the town.
The second floor had a small glass roof window which was perfect for star gazing.
Sadly, it was cloudy and we could not see any stars during our stay there.
The apartment had good heating too and we were warm!

After enjoying the room for some time, we headed out for dinner.
Initially, I found an ox bone soup restaurant just down the road.
However, it was closed.
Several other restaurants in this town were closed while those opened had few customers.
After driving through the town, we spotted a menu displayed outside a restaurant and they sold korean stews.
We were deciding between korean fried chicken and stews and we went with the latter.
Great decision because we enjoyed our meal there.

The restaurant owners were having their dinner when we entered.
The lady was friendly and having realised that we were foreigners, she passed us the English menu.
I ordered soybean paste stew while Zhi Sheng ordered the meat stew.
Both stews were not more than 10,000 krw each.

My stew was loaded with soybeans at the bottom which was different from the ones I had in Singapore.
I enjoyed my stew and Zhi Sheng definitely enjoyed his too.
The restaurant had good side dishes and one of them was the seasoned fish cake.
His favourite and he asked for a refill haha.

After filling our bellies with warm stew, we made a trip to a nearby cafe called Hueilot (휴일로).
The drive there was a little scary because we had to drive through a narrow lane which could only fit 1 car for most parts of it.
We were lucky to be the only car driving on this lane to the cafe.
There was an oncoming car when we left the cafe but thankfully we were at a section which could fit 2 cars at the same time!

Hueilot is best visited during day time to enjoy the lovely sea views.
The matcha mousse shaped like hallasan was the main reason why we wanted to come to this cafe!

Matcha mousse cake

We arrived at the cafe close to 8pm and their coffee station was closed by then.
On the bright side, they allowed us to order only 1 drink because of that hehe.
In the end, we ordered hot lemon tea and matcha mousse cake for dine in.
We also bought 2 pastries to take away for tomorrow's breakfast as they were on discount!

The matcha mousse was not too sweet and the texture was soft.
The lemon tea was a tad sour for Zhi Sheng's liking.
And that means I get to drink most of it hehe.

In the past few days, we received many public safety alert messages about the cold front/gusty winds all around Korea.
While we were enjoying our desserts, the trees outside were moving together with the gusty winds and we received yet another message.
That was when we decided to head back to our airbnb and rest for the night.
True enough, the winds that night were of another level.
