Perth 2022 Day 7: Rottnest Island

 DAY 7: 15 JUN 2022

Salmon Bay

Today we are heading to Rottnest Island!
Beware of the quokka photo spams in this post.
But I don't think you can get enough of these cuties.
So, let's begin!

We booked our return ferry with Rottness Express which departed from Fremantle (Shed B) at 9.30am.
We took a 50 minutes bus ride to Fremantle station and walked to the shed from there.
There was no need to print our tickets as the staff scans the QR codes found in the confirmation email.
That morning was really cold.
I was wearing a long sleeved knit top and my windproof jacket without the fleece layer and I was freezing!
It got better once the sun was out.

The ferry ride was 30 minutes and the waves were not that choppy.
The first thing we did upon arriving at the island was to look for the bike hire shop, Pedal & Flipper.
Each bike rental comes with a helmet and lock and it costs 30 AUD.
Cycling is definitely a good way to see the island.
However, there were a lot of up and down slopes and my right knee was crying for help towards the last bits of our route.

We decided to get some pies for brunch before exploring the island.
Rottnest bakery was filled with people and quokkas who managed to sneak in when the doors opened.

The three of us ordered a pie and donut each.
Michelle also ordered the Vegemite scroll which tasted and smelled yummy that the quokkas went after her bag later on!

While eating, the quokkas were roaming beneath our table to see if we dropped any food.
We tried to take some adorable shots of them and I think I succeeded!

The quokkas outside the food establishments were more accommodating to our selfie requests.
The ones away from the food establishments were more reserved and ran away when we came closer to them.

Anyway, off we went to explore the island on our bikes.
The scenery was beautiful, changing from lakeview to forest view and then ocean view!

We arrived at a spot which indicated a lookout point halfway through our route.
The view from that lookout point was so gorgeous!

There were other viewpoints along the route but nothing beats this one here!
The waters were clear too and we could see fishes in the water from the viewpoint.

Therafter, we continued to cycle but we noticed that the waves were getting rougher and the sky turned gloomy.
Once we arrived at Salmon Bay, our original snorkelling place, it started to rain.
We still had about 1/4 of the route left before reaching the food establishments again.
So, we cycled in the rain with our hoodies up.
We didn't see any shelters until we got closer to the bike hire.
When we saw one, we decided to wait for the rain to subside a little before cycling again.
To our dismay, it didn't and we decided to just quickly finish up the last leg.

As we still had some time before returning our bikes, we started searching for quokkas near the food establishments.
We are not allowed to feed quokkas with our food but you can feed them with the leaves or berries on the ground!

The three of us were just busy taking multiple selfies with the quokkas.
Michelle was so engrossed in the selfies such that she landed her palm and knee on quokka poop without knowing.
And she did not realise until I pointed that out to her.

Pregnant quokka

We originally wanted to cycle to the Quokka's viewpoint.
But there were many quokkas in the vicinity already and decided to return the bike and stay around this area instead.

After returning our bikes, we headed to an area under a huge tree which had many quokkas.
Some of the quokkas here were more reserved and wary of humans.
I noticed that the birds and quokkas were feeding on the berries dropped from the tree.
So I took the chance to get my hands on those berries and fed the quokkas!
The berries were excellent props for photo opportunities.
We managed to get some good shots of ourselves feeding the quokkas!

It was time to return to the ferry and head back to Fremantle.
We thoroughly enjoyed the quokka experience here on the island and were kind of sad to leave.

View of the sunset on the ferry

Since we will be at Fremantle, we decide to have dinner at a famous brewery,
Little Creatures Brewery.

We just got ourselves a seat and ordered some dishes to share!

Parma Ham pizza

Halloumi

Fish and chips

Sticky Date Pudding with vanilla ice cream

The food was okay but it was on the saltier side.
I never had halloumi which is a type of fried cheese and I loved it!
We each also ordered beer since we were at a brewery.
A definite must-try!

Supermoon was up in the sky that day and it was huge!
We were distracted by the moon until we missed the last CAT bus to the train station.
That was 7pm by the way.
In the end, we took a 15 minutes walk to the station.

Deadbeat

We headed to Woolworths to do some last minute shopping.
They had new offers and we bought a few more goodies!
I bought grainwaves which were awesome.
Wished I bought more, darn it.

And that marks our second last day in Perth (:
