Perth 2022 Day 6: Lancelin Sand Dunes

  DAY 6: 14 JUN 2022

Lancelin sand dunes

Our last day with the rental car.
We only planned for Lancelin sand dunes before returning the car at 5pm.
So, after our breakfast, we took an hour's drive to the sand dunes.
Phoebe and I wore our water booties as we didn't want sand to get trapped in our walking shoes.
The tricky thing about going to the sand dunes by 2WD is that our wheels may get trapped in the soft sand if we are not careful.
We decided to park at the Lancelin lookout because of that.
But actually...many cars drove in and parked at the bay (hard sand) just in front of the sand dunes.
Michelle probably wanted to kill me for making her walk so much.

Us walking to the sand dunes

A must do at sand dunes is sandboarding.
There was a sandboard rental truck near the entrance to the sand dunes.
I thought it was a food truck...
That was the only sandboard rental and by the time we realised it, we were almost reaching the sand dunes.
So, Phoebe and I made our way back to rent a sandboard for 10 AUD.
There was no time limit for this rental and we just had to return it before the lady ends work at 4pm.

The view at the top of the sand dunes was gorgeous.
You can even see the ocean from there!

We chose an area away from the other tourists.
I initially had difficulty moving my board down as the slope was too gentle.
So, we chose a steeper one done by other visitors and off I went!

We tried a slope which was higher up and I went down real fast.
Scary for that few seconds.
It was fun but tiring as we had to climb up the slopes after each ride.

We stopped after a few rounds and took some photos together!
I wonder how some people can do it for half a day...

We decided to visit the Lancelin lookout since we parked our car there.
The view was alright as the view of Kalbarri coastal cliffs were way better.
Lancelin lookout

Initially, we wanted to grab lunch at Lancelin, but the food did not appeal to us.
Instead, we slowly made our way down to Karrinyup, a little town in the outskirts of Perth.
The shopping centre was huge similar to the size of Vivocity.
We walked around the mall but nothing caught our attention, except the supermarkets...

We first entered Coles and bought a lot of snacks and some coffee powder as gifts.
Our duffel bags were really heavy!
We also went into Woolworths as some deals were ending today.
I bought a lot of tim tams and red rock deli crackers!

Once we were done shopping, we drove to our hotel, Pan Pacific, to check in and drop off our luggage before returning our car.
Basically, there was 1 hour free parking along a street near our hotel.
So, we first dropped Phoebe and our bags off at the hotel lobby while Michelle and I searched for a parking lot.
We were lucky to find a lot and got a free parking ticket from the machine to display on our dashboard.
However, there was a crazy man shouting near where we parked and the both of us were a little scared that he will approach us.

The check in at Pan Pacific was smooth and we only paid S$360 for two nights!
We could see the river from our room and the beds were comfy.
The only thing which could have been improved was the insufficient lighting in the room.

We were running late and we hurriedly got back to our car.
We only had 20 minutes to 5pm and we still had to pump full tank before returning the car.
The petrol station was near the car rental place but there was a long queue.
We were thinking of returning the car without full tank but decided against it as the extra cost we have to pay for that is more than the late return fee.

By the time we got to the car rental place, it was 5.10pm.
Thank goodness, they did not charge us any late return fee!

We decided to take a short walk to an italian restaurant, Catalano's, for dinner!
This was our first proper meal of the day as we snacked the whole day.

Having had Ciao Italia, the food here was alright.
The serving size was huge though.
We could not finish the pizza so we packed them back and had it for our breakfast the next day.
As we had a pizza box on hand, we took a Didi back to Pan Pacific before heading to Elizabeth Quay.

We made use of a CAT bus to reduce the walking as it will take us 20 minutes to walk there from Pan Pacific.

We really wanted gelato and we hunted down a gelato place right at Elizabeth Quay.
We were also settling the ferry bookings for Rottnest Island there too!
Lesson learnt: make use of the early bird prices if you can.
But you also need to factor in bad weather and possible change in date after booking if you do so.

This marks the end of Day 6!
