Perth 2022 Day 4: Kalbarri

  DAY 4: 12 JUN 2022

Nature's window at Kalbarri National Park

Halfway through our Perth trip and we are continuing up north to Kalbarri today.
Before that, we ate our self-prepped continental breakfast provided by our host:
Plain croissants, jam, spreads, small packets of milk and orange juice.
The orange juice was gross by the way.
When I opened the fridge last night and saw the croissants in the ziploc bag, I seriously thought it was left behind by the previous guests and toseed it to one corner of the fridge.
Little did I know the croissants were actually for us haha.

Our initial plan before getting on the road again was to get some coffee at Quiet Life cafe and explore The Esplanade at Geraldton which is just in front of the cafe.
Someone in the group really has bad luck.
The moment Michelle turned off the car engine at The Esplanade carpark, it started to drizzle.
Moments after ordering our takeaway coffee, it started pouring.
Although we were in the shelter, the rain was blown in and the lower part of my jeans were drenched.
The rain was still heavy after we got our coffee, so we decided to skip the Esplanade and head back to our apartment since we still had an hour before the official check out time.

Latte from Quiet Life cafe

Once we were done with coffee, we finally got on the road again!
The drive to Kalbarri took 1 hour 45 minutes.
We decided to stop by a few coastal cliff lookout points just before Kalbarri town.

View from Eagle Gorge Lookout

The view of the coastal cliffs was so awesome!
In fact, my photos do not do justice to the views.
There is a path which leads you down to the beach.
We would have gone down to the beach if our bladders weren't full.
We couldn't imagine the time spent going down and climbing back up haha.

We went to the mushroom rock lookout too but we had to hike down further to see it.
After going down for a short while, we decided to turn back to the car because the views would have been similar to that of Eagle Gorge lookout.

We drove to our accommodation for the night, Kalbarri Palm Resort.
It was about 12.45pm when we arrived to check in.
The staff quickly agreed to let us check in even though the official check in time is 2pm.
We got a room on the first floor which was great!
The room was nice and clean!
Phoebe and I shared the double bed while Michelle took the single bed.

After checking in, we headed to Red Bluff bakery to have a quick lunch.
We bought 3 items to share:
Pesto chicken sandwich, Apple rhubarb cake and homemade roll

Apple rhubarb cake

Pastry roll

The pastries were not fantastic but enough to fill our tummies.
The both of them bought chai latte and hot chocolate to pair with the pastries.

The highlight of the day was Kalbarri National Park!
This is my second favourite place of this trip.
The places we wanted to visit in the park were paid areas so we had to pay 15 AUD for vehicle entry.
We initially thought there would be a person manning the ticketing booth.
To our surprise, there was no one and we had to get our ticket via a self-service machine.
There was a line of cars waiting behind us while I was flustered because I had to get the ticket, oops.
Michelle moved the car further front so that we do not hog the lane hehe.

Our first attraction in the park was Michelle's nemesis, the skywalk!

Kalbarri Skywalk

Perched on a cliff top, the skywalk offered gorgeous bird's eye views of the river meanders and gorges.
The skywalk platforms were made in a way where you could see the bottom.
Those with the fear of heights should never look down.
Michelle did a great job exploring the skywalk haha.

After snapping multiple photos at the skywalk, we headed to our next attraction: Nature's window!
The way to Nature's window was entirely down slopes but the workout was worth it.

More river meanders here but with rainbows!
It was drizzling on and off with the sun still shining which was indeed the best recipe for rainbows.
We even caught a double rainbow, so pretty!

To get to the nature's window, you will need to climb on the rocks and walk all the way to the end.
Just be careful and hold onto the rocks if you are afraid.

Nature's window

Isn't this rock formation amazing?
Wind eroded opening. All done by nature.

The views just beyond the nature's window are as amazing.

River meanders just in front of the nature's window

After nature's window, we headed to our last attraction in the park: Z bend lookout
The hike to this lookout point was longer and entirely down slopes too.
When you go down, you have to go back up.
But since we have travelled all the way here, we must have a look at it!

The views there were my least favourite out of the 3 attractions in the park.
The river was rather dry which did not the meanders obvious to our eyes.
Oh well!

There were other lookout points in the national park such as the Hawks head lookout and Ross Graham lookout.
However, we had to drive back to Kalbarri town and get on a different road to get there.
The drive will take 40 minutes and the sun was setting.
We decided to call it a day because the views today were gorgeous enough.

Echidna

On our drive out of the park to town, we spotted an echidna and a rock wallaby!
Michelle spotted the echidna while driving.
We thought it was either a porcupine or hedgehog...
But the both of them googled and it was an echidna.
I filmed an IG video of the echidna then and Michelle kept screaming "hi hedgehog" in the background.
To her horror, I uploaded the video with sound on haha!

Rock wallaby

During our hike, we saw poop on the ground and the information board at the park wrote that rock wallaby can be found here.
So the poop belonged to a rock wallaby and since then, we really wanted to see a wallaby.
Ask and you shall receive...
Because we really saw a rock wallaby!
I initially gazed towards a signboard at the T-junction and at the corner of my eye, I saw the wallaby by the road curiously looking at us.
Michelle reversed and we kept snapping photos of the wallaby (:

When we arrived back in town, the sun was setting and we stopped by the beach to watch the sun set.

We headed to a popular hotspot in Kalbarri for dinner: Finlay's Kalbarri.

The place was really crowded despite having many tables.
As they did not have a table for us when we arrived, they got us seated next to an outdoor fireplace to look at the menu.
After 5 to 10 minutes of waiting, we got a table!

Beer tasting paddle

Phoebe and I ordered a tasting paddle (20 AUD) made up of 4 different types of beer to share.

For our mains, we ordered fish and chips and surf and turf to share.
Surf and turf was expensive and there were only a few prawns.
The ambience here was nice though, as there was live music.

After dinner, we headed back to our hotel to rest for night.
And that's it for day 3!
