Perth 2022 Day 2: Fremantle

 DAY 2: 10 JUN 2022

It's Friday!
Fremantle is one of the must-visit places in Perth and weekend markets open from Friday to Sunday.
So, we decided to spend some time today exploring Fremantle.
We took bus 910 as the bus stop is a few minutes away from our hotel and an attraction we wanted to visit was situated along the bus route.
The bus ride costs 4.90 AUD (cash payment) but we purchased a day pass for 9.80 AUD which gave us unlimited travel on any Transperth public transport today.

To get to Fremantle, you have the options of taking either bus, train or ferry.
Throughout our time in Perth city, we made use of Google maps or Transperth app to navigate.
The Transperth app is especially useful as the bus arrival timings and fares can be easily found there.
Perth's version of ez-link is known as smartrider.
We did not purchase the smartrider card as the card costs 10 AUD and it is non-refundable.
Each ride is slightly more expensive when paying by cash but we saved more by using the cash option.
Sinilar to Singapore, we paid cash to the bus driver upon boarding or used the ticket machines at train stations.

Rainbow sea containers near Fremantle

We alighted after 40 minutes to get to our first attraction of the day:
Rainbow sea containers!
The containers were just a distance away from the bus stop and we were the only ones there when we arrived.

We found out about this place while scrolling through IG and tiktok for attraction ideas.
People who visit the containers is definitely doing it for nice photos or the gram as there is nothing much in the vicinity.
After snapping some pictures, we boarded bus 910 from the same bus stop to head towards Fremantle.
Do note that transport tickets are valid for 2 hours so you do not have to re-purchase another ticket if it is still within the time window.

Streets in Fremantle

City of Fremantle town hall

After a short bus ride, we arrived in Fremantle!
On our way to the Fremantle market, we walked past many shopping arcades which house local Aussie fashion brands and cafes.

Entrance to Fremantle Market

There were a variety of shops in the market, from clothes to little novelty shops to food.
Having been to the Queen Victoria market in Melbourne, this market is definitely of a smaller scale and rather underwhelming.

One of the highly raved food stalls here is Eggspot which is similar to Eggslut.
Other than sandwiches, they also sell burgers.
We settled with the Eggspot brioche bun sandwich at 10 AUD.
The sandwich was good but rather pricey for an egg sandwich.

There are some tables behind Eggspot where you can have your food.
Other than that, there isn't much seating area in the market.

We continued to explore the market once we were done with the sandwich.
There was a section which housed a few fruit and vegetable stalls.
The avocados were going for around 1.50 AUD each, so cheap!

Specialty store selling jerky

We spotted a specialty store selling a veriety of jerky meat.
Kangaroo jerky was one of them.
Definitely not my kind of food.

Thereafter, we headed to a cafe called Duck Duck Bruce for brunch.
Michelle bookmarked this cafe when she was researching for good food in Fremantle.
This cafe is just a short walk from the market and it was packed when we arrived.
After waiting for 25 minutes, we finally got an indoor table.

Latte

When in Australia, you must have coffee!
I prefer tea than coffee in any occasion, but the coffee in Australia is really good to skip it.
As we had Eggspot earlier, we ordered 2 dishes to share.

This Little Piggy Went To The Market

This Little Piggy Went To The Market (22 AUD) is actually a spiced sausage burger with bacon and fried egg.
The burger tasted alright, not fantastic because the other dish was outstanding!

Vanilla pancake stack with burnt orange curd

The star dish here is called Orange Is The New Stack (19 AUD).
It is a vanilla pancake stack with burnt orange curd and poppyseed cheesecake whip.
This was amazing.
Initially, we wanted to have the burger first and finish off with the pancakes.
But nope, the both of them couldn't wait and took a bite while I was cutting the burger.
And they couldn't stop eating the pancakes haha.
This is definitely one of our favourite dishes in this trip!

Railway tracks next to the ferris wheel

We decided to take a walk by the waterfront after brunch.

Next, we headed to the Fremantle prison since it is top on the list of Fremantle attractions.

I have been to the Pennsylvania prison during my USA exchange programme.
We weren't really keen on going for a prison tour so we just visited the free galleries and exhibitions available.

We pretty much covered most of the attractions we wanted to visit by 2pm.
So, we took a train to City West station for some shopping at Watertown brand outlet centre!
There was a good mix of global brands and local Aussie brands there.
I got a crop tee from Cotton On at 5 AUD.
I'll probably wear it for hiking in Singapore.

It was 5pm when we were done shopping and we decided to head to our dinner place, Ciao Italia.
The restaurant is located in South Perth which means we had to take a bus.
We first took the free yellow CAT bus which brought us to East Perth.
However, there was traffic jam everywhere as it was peak hour...people get off work at 5pm here.
Upon alighting from the CAT bus, we walked to a different bus stop and boarded bus 34!

We were greeted by the many people waiting outside the restaurant when we arrived.
We added our name in the queue list and got a table after 30 minutes.
The restaurant was constantly busy!
Delivery orders just kept coming and many dine in patrons were waiting for their food.
The crowd and buzz meant that the food here is really awesome.
And indeed it was!

Panna e Funghi Tortellini

We ordered two dishes to share as the portions are huge.
The first dish is the tortellini (28.50 AUD), my favourite!
The tortellini was huge and filled with a hell lot of stuffing.
It was so good.
The best tortellini I ever had and the price is reasonable.

Pizza

We ordered burrata pizza with prosciutto and rocket as our second dish.
The pizza was good too!

Tiramisu

The tiramisu (13.50 AUD) is highly raved in the restaurant's Google reviews.
And of course we had to order it.
The tiramisu was soft and the taste of the espresso was just right!
We finished it within minutes after it was served.

We headed back to Travelodge hotel after dinner.
We initially wanted to take bus 32 which departs from a bus stop near the restaurant.
However, to our dismay, the bus frequency has reduced and the next bus only arrives close to an hour later.
We decided to take a 15 minutes walk to another bus stop to take bus 910.
Actually, I think the walk was shorter than expected because Phoebe and I walked really fast.
It was really dark and I was scared of getting robbed.
Poor Michelle haha, but we made it just in time for the bus because of that!

And this marks the end of day 2!
