Scandinavia 2019 Day 7: Rovaniemi, Finland

DAY 7: 2 DEC 2019
Starry night at Apukka

It's time to head back to the airport for yet another destination!
We will be spending 3 days in Rovaniemi which is the official home town of Santa Claus
in the Arctic Circle!
As our flight leaves at noon, we had a sumptuous breakfast at our hotel before leaving.

Shopping at Helsinki Airport
I booked a round trip journey with Finnair and it costs S$185 including a 23kg checked baggage.
Our flight was delayed by an hour and we only took off at around 1300.
When we were finally flying above Lapland,
we were greeted by their massive forests covered in snow blankets.
The sight was way more mesmerising as the sun was setting then!

It was about 1430 when we landed in Rovaniemi airport.
Our home for the night is our most expensive stay, a glass igloo at Apukka Resort.
The resort is 12km away from the airport.
The only way to get there without a car rental is by taxi or public buses.
A taxi ride costs about 50 euros, which was exorbitant for such a short ride!
So, we took the public bus instead.
Public buses were not frequent but the timetables were listed online.
The next bus headed towards Apukka arrived at around 1545, just 10 minutes
later than the timing listed in the timetable.
You can purchase your tickets online or pay in cash to the driver.
We informed the driver that we will be stopping at Apukka and he told us the fare amount.
We paid 6.90 euros each which was way cheaper than the taxi ride!

We arrived after 15 minutes and the bus stopped just outside the resort along the main road.
It was pitch black when we arrived at 1600.
I had to turn on the flashlight on my phone to make sure that we do not step into knee deep snow!
We dragged our luggages through the snowy road to get to our resort.

Night view of Glass Igloos
The check in area was cosy and warm.
I booked a night at the glass igloo for S$845 which includes a breakfast buffet for two.
This is the cheapest glass igloo near Rovaniemi as most of them were at least S$1000 per night.
The staff were really friendly too and they did not hard sell their tour packages.
They had lots of fun activities catering to all ages such as snowmobile and ice fishing.
However, do note that you are in the Arctic Circle now and everything is costly.
We were set to embark on the Apukka Reindeer Journey with them tomorrow
as I pre-booked it on the visitrovaniemi website before our trip.
If I remembered clearly, I had to pay for taxes if I booked directly with the resort and
it was slightly cheaper through the vistrovaniemi website.

I was super excited when we opened the door to the igloo!
The room was bigger than I expected and the bed was directly under the glass ceiling which
was perfect for a night of star gazing.
We had an attached bathroom and it had everything we needed.

Lappish tent

We hung around before exploring the area using the map we got when we checked in.
There were many fireplaces located around the resort where we could just
hang out in the tent around the fire.
As it was really dark, I couldn't figure out the route to the lake.
So we decided to head to the restaurant, Restaurant Aitta, for an early dinner.
We decided to treat ourselves with a nice dinner since we ate cinnamon rolls and snacks
for lunch.

Restaurant Aitta

We ordered creamy soup as a starter to warm ourselves up.
Then we had sauteed reindeer with mashed potatoes and salmon pizza as our mains to share.
We also ordered some drinks and creme brulee to treat ourselves!
The total bill was 67 euros which was not as expensive as I thought it would be.

We walked back to our glass igloo and spent most of our time relaxing there.
It was rather cloudy that night but we managed to take really nice photos of the stars
above us!

That's it for Day 7!
