Grad Trip Day 20 & 21: Berlin, Germany

DAY 20: 7 JUNE 2014
We said goodbye to Prague and left for Berlin in the morning.
We arrived in Berlin ZOB at around 12pm via eurolines and headed straight to our apartment
located near Portsdamer Platz.
East Side Gallery
Our host, Ronald, was really nice and he even prepared a map and guidebooks for our references.
As we only have a full day in Berlin, we just grabbed the necessary items and left to meet up
with Michelle's friend at the famous Curry 36 shop.
Doner wrap from Mustafa's Gemuse Kebap
Currywurst from Curry 36
Our lunch was so yummy!
We had currywurst and wraps from two famous stalls and they are definitely worth queuing.

After lunch, we paid a visit to the Berlin Wall memorial.
Berlin Wall Memorial
The Berlin Wall Memorial was not as packed as I have expected.
We didn't stay for long as it was really hot and we had other places to visit as well.
So we took a tram to the East Side Gallery, which is a must-see in Berlin.
The walls of the East Side Gallery stretch over 1.3km long and are painted by various artistes.
I really enjoyed my walk down the gallery.
The paintings were really nice as well and some do tell a story too.
After visiting the gallery, we proceeded to take the metro to Gendarmenmarkt, which
was located near the museum island.
Round the corner at Gendarmenmarkt, there is a famous chocolate shop called
Fassbender & Rausch Chocolatiers.
The chocolate architectures were just amazing!
They look exactly like the monuments they were replicating and they look so chocolatey!
Chocolate Brandenburg Gate
Chocolate Teddy Bear
After a while, we arrived in museum island.
We didn't enter the famous Pergamon museum because we are not fans of museums.
But if you love museums, you should definitely pay a visit to the Pergamon museum.
Berliner Dom
It was time for dinner and Michelle has been craving for the pork knuckle she ate during
her last visit to Berlin.
We made our way to Brauhaus Mitte, located near Alexanderplatz station.

Pork knuckle
I ordered something else instead of the pork knuckle as I'm not a fan of it.
I did have a taste of the pork knuckle though, and it was really tender and juicy.
Our dinner bill came up to 30 euros, which was pretty reasonable due to the portion sizes.
And we have been saving for good meals, so we were willing to splurge on this own.

Right after dinner, we took bus 100 which was known for its scenic route.
The ride was really pretty especially since we took it at night.
We passed by many famous attractions, such as the Reichstag building and the Brandenburg gate,
which were brightly lit up.

What a beautiful end to my first day in Berlin.

--------------------------------------

DAY 21: 8 JUNE 2014
We only had the morning to visit the remaining attraction sites.
The first on our list was the holocaust memorial.
This is a memorial for the Jewish victims of the holocaust that took place from 1941 to 1945.
We arrived before 9am and there were only a handful of tourists.
We didn't get a chance to enter the exhibitions as they only open at 10am.
It would have been nice to visit the exhibitions to learn more about the memorial
or the holocaust that happened.

After visiting the memorial, we made our way to the Brandenburg gate on foot.
Brandenburg gate is one of the best known landmarks of Germany.
Brandenburg Gate
The gate looks just as beautiful in the day.
We hung around and snapped some photos before making our way to see the Reichstag building
which was 6 mins walk away.

After all the sightseeing, we finally did some shopping.
Rittersport!
This brand of chocolate is expensive in Singapore, and carries a limited number of flavours.
Hence, we decided to buy lots of them back as gifts for our friends.
Rittersport museum
Each bar starts from 0.85 euros and the limited edition flavours, such as
strawberry yoghurt, were going at 0.95 euros.
My favourite is definitely rum and raisin.
It was gone within a minute when I shared it with my family.

And so, our adventure in Berlin came to an end.
It was definitely a rush and I am very thankful for having such an accomodating travel buddy.
I will definitely return to Germany in future because I really enjoyed Berlin a lot!
Way more than Prague (:
