Europe 2013 Day 3 & 4: Rome, Italy

DAY 3: 15 MAY 2013
After exploring most of the famous attractions or monuments in Rome,
we were now left with the next highlight of Rome
The Vatican City.

Amanda suggested booking the Vatican Museum tickets online since the
queue is famously known to be long.
As I have forgotten to bring my student card for this trip, we bought two adult and one
student entrance ticket for the Vatican museum.
So, each of us paid about 17 euros for our ticket.
But before entering the museum, we had some time to spare as we booked the 11.30am slot.
We checked tripadvisor for some grab and go food, and we chanced upon
a panini shop called Duecentogradi Panini.
The panini I had was only 4.50 euros, and it was delicious!

After eating our panini brunch, we went into the museum to collect our tickets and
started exploring this huge place.

After visiting the Vatican museum, we headed to the next attraction on our list:
St Peter's Basilica.
To our dismay, the basilica was closed for an event that afternoon and we had
to return the next day if we wish to enter.
Not knowing where to head to, we decided to return to our apartment and
brainstorm for places we can go to.
And since the famous gelateria was on the way as well,
each of us had our own gelato this time!
After brainstorming for about an hour, we decided to go to the shopping district in Rome.
Sadly, nothing caught my eye, and thus, I didn't get anything.
I was rather tempted to get a pair of birkenstock for my mum though.
However, I was kind of reluctant to carry it for the remaining two and the half weeks,
especially since we booked easyjet flights to Amsterdam and London.
Nevertheless, it was a nice window shopping experience for me.

I guess that was the end of our day 3 in Rome!

DAY 4: 16 MAY 2013
The day started out with the intention of visiting St Peter's Basilica.
Like all the other tourist attractions in Rome, the line to enter the Basilica was crazily long.
It took us more than thirty minutes to get in.
Nevertheless, it was worth the wait since St Peter's Basilica is the world's largest basilica,
and I get to visit the Sistine Chapel.

Outside St Peter's Basilica
One of the main sites inside the Basilica is the statue of St Peter.
Like any other visitor to the basilica, we joined the line and touched St Peter's foot.
The foot was definitely worn out from all the touches every single day.
Another highlight of the basilica is the Sistine chapel.
The paintings inside the Sistine chapel are works of Michelangelo.
Every painting was done intricately well, and it was definitely an honour to see those paintings.
Having said that, I was trapped inside the chapel for more than thirty minutes
due to the massive crowd, mostly tour groups.
This visit is definitely not for those who are claustrophobic!

Right after visiting the basilica, we went to explore a different part of Rome, Trastevere.
Trastevere is located on the South of the Vatican city.
It is definitely the less touristy than other parts of Rome.

The stroll through Trastevere was rather relaxing since we were away from the crowds.
After Trastevere, we went to search for the Mouth of Truth,
which was situated in the church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin.
It took us around twenty minutes to get to our turn.
I didn't have any photos with me since we only used two cameras and so,
this reminds me that I have to get the photos from them soon!

We entered the church after that, and visited the underground chamber inside the church for 1 euro.
Since we were out walking almost the whole day, we decided to head
back to our apartment for a short rest before going to the shopping district later.
As usual, I did not get anything haha.

That sums up our trip to Rome!
