Scandinavia 2019 Day 3: South Coast, Iceland
DAY 3: 28 NOV 2019
Another day of adventure awaits us!
We will be going on a 2 days and 1 night South Coast tour
with Troll Expeditions
for the next two days.
There were many good reviews about Troll Expeditions and their
South Coast multi-day tour
is the cheapest among all the tour operators.
Hence, I made the booking in late October and paid 49,900
isk (370 eur) per person.
We waited at bus stop #8 again and our guide, Reynir, came
to pick us up at 0800.
We had a small group of 12 for this tour and I could never
ask for a nicer group to be with.
Our first stop was Selfoss waterfall.
The sun rose when we arrived and we were given about 50
minutes here.
As it was winter, the ground was icy and made it difficult
to get around.
There was a trail which you could take to get behind the
waterfall.
However, it was too icy and we decided to not take risks and
jeopardise our entire trip.
So instead, we explored the neighbouring area which had
smaller waterfalls.
There is a viewing platform at the top just like Gulfoss and
I would recommend you to see the waterfall from the top if you have time.
We didn’t manage to do so, but the view was still pretty!
After a quick lunch stop, we drove for 2.5 hours to Diamond
beach.
As the daylight hours are short during winter, the sun started to set
when we arrived at Diamond beach.
Diamond beach got its name for the many icebergs swept on shore every day.
The sand on the beach is black which made the icebergs glisten more in the sun.
After spending 30 minutes at Diamond beach, we drove to the opposite side
of the road where Jokusarlon glacier lagoon is located.
Darkness was almost setting in when we arrived at the lagoon.
I was slightly disappointed as I wished for more daylight.
Nevertheless, thanks to my camera's night mode function, I managed to take
some nice photos of the lagoon.
Gerdi Guesthouse
The guesthouse was a 10 minutes' drive from the glacier lagoon.
My mum and I stayed in a twin room with private bathroom which is included
in our tour package.
The downside of staying here is that we were in the middle of nowhere and
we had to dine at their restaurant.
The prices were steep where the cheapest main course was 3,700 isk.
My mum and I shared a bowl of onion soup and baked cod as our main dish.
The total bill was 5,350 isk if I remembered clearly.
Based on the tour itinerary, we were supposed to catch the northern lights tonight.
However, I didn't realise we had to hunt them on our own.
My mum and I tried our luck at 2300 but there was no sign of any lights in the sky.
It would have been nice if our guide arranged the northern lights wake up call or
brought us out to hunt for a short while.
Nevertheless, I was thankful that we saw it on our first night!
That's it for day 3!
