Hong Kong 2018 Day 1 & 2: Kowloon & Dragon's Back Hike

DAY 1: 8 JUN 2018

It's finally time to fly again!
We chanced upon a Jetstar sale and decided to book a trip to Hong Kong this June.
So off we went once our protected time kicked in!

We arrived at the airport at around 8.30pm as our flight was delayed due to
air traffic congestion in Hong Kong.
Prior to this trip, I purchased an 8 days SIM card and airport express tickets on Klook.
The SIM card collection was at A13 counter and we were done within 5 minutes.
There was no need to collect the airport express tickets as it is in the form of a QR code
and all we needed to do was scan it at the gantry!

We took the K5 airport express shuttle to our hotel, Le Prabelle Hotel.
I highly recommend this hotel as it is a minute's walk from Prince Edward MTR exit C2
and the room is huge!
We booked a room with 4 single beds and 1.5 bathrooms, which means
1 shower + 1 toilet and 1 separate toilet.
The average nightly rate was S$160.
What a steal!

By the time we checked in to our hotel, it was close to 10pm.
We took a train to Jordan to have dinner at Mak's noodles!
This is my favourite place to have wanton noodles.
It costs HK$37 for a bowl of wanton noodles, however, be warned that the portion is
really small and you may need to order another bowl if you have a big appetite.
The beef noodles were good too.

After a bowl of wanton noodles, we dropped by Hui Liu Shan, which was only a few doors down.
This place is famous for its mango desserts and it is a must visit in HK!

DAY 2: 9 JUN 2018
View from our hotel room
Rise and shine!
The weather took a turn for the better today with the sun shining in the morning.
Grabbing the chance of good weather, we proceeded with what we planned initially:
Dragon's Back hike!

To get to the start of the trail, we took a train to Shau Kei Wan station, followed by the No. 9
bus ride to To Tei Wan.
Fret not, there will be many other hikers with you on the bus and they will know where
to alight if you are unsure.

The first 25 mins of the hike was full of steps as we had to climb to the vantage point
over Shek O Peninsula.
But we were treated to gorgeous views along the way up.

The view was really gorgeous from the vantage point.
We decided to continue our hike towards the Shek O Peak.
After 30 minutes of up and downhill, we finally arrived at Shek O Peak.

We then decided to continue with the rest of the trail which ends at Big Wave Bay.

It took us another 2 hours to arrive at Big Wave Beach.
During these 2 hours, we were hiking within the mountains and were surrounded
by greenery and streams.
I was exhausted when I arrived at the beach but overall, it was a relatively easy hike!

As it was lunchtime, we decided to head to Central.
You could either take bus no. 9  or take a taxi back to Shau Kei Wan.
We settled with the latter and it costs us HK$100...ouch.

Once we arrived in Central, we headed straight for Yat Lok Roast Goose.
This is a famous 1 Michelin star restaurant and there was a short line outside when we arrived.
We only waited for 10 minutes and we were in!

Roast Goose Breast Meat with Rice
I ordered the roast goose rice (HK$61) and it was awesome!
The skin was crispy with a mix of sweet and savoury flavours.
The meat was tender and juicy.
I would have loved to have more sauce but I was satisfied with what was served.
It was so good that we paid another visit before we left.

A meal is incomplete without desserts.
Oodies Foodies is highly recommended by many and it was a 5 to 10 minutes walk away.
Along the way, we passed by Sing Heung Yuen (famous for Tomato Noodles) and
Kau Kee (famous for Beef Noodles).
We didn't get to try them out so I will probably save it for my next trip.

Night Wolf
We arrived at Oodies Foodies and decided on their signature item, Night Wolf.
It was a combination of an egglet, soft serves and many more.
It was definitely a good choice as the flavours were lightweight and we finished it up
in no time!

Before heading back to the hotel to freshen up, we made a quick trip to Jenny Bakery at Sheung Wan.
There was no queue and we each bought a large tin of cookies (HK$140).
It is definitely expensive for cookies but my family loves it.
Do note that there is a limit to the number of tins you could purchase at the store.

Ichiran Ramen Restaurant
This evening, we decided to have Ichiran Ramen!
This has got to be my favourite ramen place and I love their booth concept.
We visited the branch in Tsim Sha Tsui and there was a line inside the restaurant
when we arrived at 5pm.
When we left the restaurant at around 6.15pm, the lines were outside the restaurant which
means a wait time of at least 1.5 hours.
Secretly glad that we went for an early dinner.

We waited for close to 45 minutes before we were seated.
It was an open concept, just like any other restaurant.
I was slightly disappointed as I wanted to experience the booth concept once again.
Nevertheless, at least we had each other's company throughout our meal there.
Each bowl of ramen costs HK$89 excluding the egg.
Definitely worth it.
I wanted to purchase a box of instant noodles but it costs close to S$40 for a box of 5
and I decided against it.
Shall purchase it during my Osaka trip in November.

Night lights of the CBD

We walked around Tsim Sha Tsui for some time before heading to the waterfront promenade
in front of the Cultural Centre for a light show: A Symphony of Lights.
It was their first time watching this and we managed to secure a good viewing spot.
The show lasted for about 10 minutes and the night lights of the CBD were really pretty.
You should definitely watch this once if you make a trip to HK!
