Newport, RI: Where Atlantic Ocean is at sight

RHODE ISLAND: 6 OCT 2012
Newport is one of the many cities in Rhode Island. This trip actually came about when the school organised a bus trip to Newport, which only costs US$10! Although it is about two hours away from my university, a self-booked trip would have cost way more than what we paid, and so I would say we definitely grabbed a good deal! (:
The scenery on the way to Newport was gorgeous. Newport is known for being a nautical wonderland, with many docking grounds and yachts sighted everywhere. A professor was our tour guide and he did a fabulous job in introducing the beauty of Newport to all of us. He took us on the famous ten-mile ocean drive and stopped over at several places for us to enjoy ocean breeze!

We had free time right after the ocean drive. As usual, being undecided about where to go, we just wandered about the vicinity. We chanced upon the numerous wharfs in Newport, each situated next to one another. Octoberfest was going on as well and I wanted to join in the fun! But...discovering Newport is of higher importance than experiencing Octoberfest, and so I gave it a miss! Boohoo! :(

We then settled for lunch at The Red Parrot, as recommended by the professor. Newport is well known for their seafood. How can we miss out on that? (:

As the saying goes, "never judge a book by its cover". Although the entree does not look appealing at all, the fish was fantastic and the meat melted in my mouth! It was definitely worth the price I paid.

After lunch, we headed towards the start of the cliff walk. Cliff walk is one of the famous attractions worldwide. It was recommended by National Geographic too! (:

The scenery was definitely stunning throughout the two hours walk, and it was definitely worth all the effort in finding our way to the cliff walk. All of us enjoyed the walk a lot since we don't get to see such beautiful sights in Singapore.
Right after the cliff walk, we made our way to The Great Gatsby, one of the many million-dollar mansions under the Preservation Sociey of Newport County. I have not read the book or watched the film before, and I absolutely had no clue before and after visiting this mansion. My only take-away from this mansion tour was how grand the mansion was designed. From the high ceiling interior, to the many chandeliers, to the long hallways with huge bedrooms assembling along the hallway, and to the exquisite bathroom furnitures displayed.
This is the kind of mansion only the rich and famous can afford. So, dream on!
We didn't have much time left after touring the mansion. And so, we went to satisfy our craving for B&J's, and headed back to school!

After travelling quite a bit, Newport is now my favourite number 2! (: I wish I had the time to explore Providence as well. Nevertheless, I am happy that I managed to visit Newport, and get up close with the Atlantic Ocean!

That's all folks! (:
